EDITORIAL: SS INTERS NEWS AND VIEWS
Welcome to the Straightshots interleague website, being hosted by a freebee host called YOLA! I hope you like the bright simplistic fuss-free design! Being a born and bred Londoner, I will be using traditional English spelling throughout to which the Americans amongst you will be unaccustomed! For example, honour rather than honor, organise rather than organize! But I'm sure you will get used to it!
Straightshots as a Yahoo Pool league was one of the best established around and the fact that we have existed for many years speaks volumes for the commitment and dedication devoted to the League by numerous people over the years. The interleague section came as a natural progression on the road to becoming a stabilised league and I am immensely proud that through good organisation and hard work we have been very successful.
Sadly there was a general decline in Yahoo Pool due to numerous reasons, a prominent factor being that Yahoo stopped listing pool as one of the main games on their Games home page. So people wishing to find a casual game to play did not immediately see pool as an option; they would have to go searching to find that it even exists. Once upon a time pool was one of the top ten games in Yahoo and with the icon always displayed, the numbers of individuals playing pool were high. This was reflected in league membership generally being very good with plenty of leagues thriving. When Yahoo foolishly phased out all their parlour games on 31st March 2014, including pool, they decimated a worldwide pool community and sent leagues scattering to new gaming sites.
SS continue to survive but like other leagues we struggled to get members to play. We moved to Gamedesire in 2014 after an unsuccessful spell in Pogo pool. The innovative SS Cam Cup format of flexible qualifying sets which get reported as 'leagues' has helped boost activity dramatically which can only be good for the League. But we still need to be mindful that members enjoy playing the 'bread and butter' tourneys, so however much we push interleague and Cam Cup participation, SS must continue to run tourneys on a daily basis.
My motivation has always been fueled by glancing at our impressive Roll of Honour. It is not a question of how many competitions we have won year by year, but an overall picture of our interleague success as an established pool league. I can look at a considerable amount of trophies along the way and commend the many players who have contributed towards this success. You may well be one of these so please feel a sense of pride in what you – and SS as an inters team – have achieved over a lengthy period of time.
